Can a Christian lady put on trouser?
Can a Christian lady put on trouser? To Address the issue of clothing, we have to look at the genesis of clothing. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God instruction at the garden of Eden, they realized their nakedness. It is recorded in Genesis 3:21: “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” They were both wearing coat. The purpose of clothing to both the man and the woman was to cover their nakedness. What make this question a little bit complex was that; When God cloth Adam and Eve with coat, we were not told how They were dressed in the coat.
Some women who wore trouser at home for casual work, will never put on trousers and go to church. The scripture doesn’t specify the type of cloth that should be worn by a man or woman. The debate of whether a Christian lady is allowed to wear trouser or not is in the real sense not a biblical debate but a historic/cultural debate. To get the answer to whether a Christian lady can put on trouser or not, we have to also look at it from a Historical and cultural perspective.
Can a Christian lady put on trouser? historical perspective
Trousers began as a military gear used especially by Cavalrymen and martial warriors. Horses are used in the battle field and Trousers were first introduced because robes are uncomfortable to wear on horseback. In fact, those who wore trousers in battle had the upper hand over those who wore robes. In the ancient period, women are not part of the military. Trouser was introduced in the roman empire after the fall of Rome by calvary knights.
The first recorded reports of trousers
The first recorded reports of trousers were made by sixth century BC Greek geographers. They noted the appearance of Persian, Eastern and Central Asian horse riders. The comfort they provided from extended periods on horseback made trousers a practical choice. But it was not only worn by male horse riders but also female. Images of male and female horse riders wearing trousers can be found on ancient ceramics.
Despite being worn by both sexes in ancient times, trousers were a “masculine” garment for hundreds of years. Instead, women wore long, voluminous skirts. But, in the nineteenth century, women started wearing a form of trousers again. These were worn only for horse riding, although they wore full skirts on top of them to keep them hidden.
By the 1880s, women in the West finally started wearing trousers for leisure activities. They were safer to wear when cycling, as the trousers were far less likely to get caught in the wheels. They also allowed greater freedom of movement. Additionally, they were considered healthier to wear than the cumbersome skirts they usually wore.
Women wear not allowed to wear trousers on the U.S senate floor until 1993.
In 1993, Senators Barbara Mikulski and Carol Moseley Braun wore trousers onto the floor in defiance of the rule, and female support staff followed soon after, with the rule being amended later that year by Sergeant-at-Arms Martha pope to allow women to wear trousers on the floor so long as they also wore jacket. 1960s, Andre Courreges introduce jeans for Women, leading to the era of designer jeans. In 1970s, trousers became quite fashionable for women in the united states.
The popular scripture used to weather a Christian lady can put on trouser is Deuteronomy 22:5.
“A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.” Even though the scripture does not specify the cloths for the man and the one for the woman. We can see that the coat both have a pattern. The book of genesis did not also specify the pattern of cloth for the Man and the woman.
It is not all about whether a Christian lady can but on trousers or not. A man should dress like a man and a woman as a woman. What the scripture emphasize on is modesty. If for some obvious reasons a woman must wear trousers, it should not expose the figures of the woman in such a manner that will tempt men. Today, there are trousers that are made specifically for women. It will be inappropriate if a man should put on that same trouser because he believes that all trousers are for men only. As a man, you will never want to wear a pair of women’s slacks or skinny jeans because you know that they ‘pertain to a woman’.
Historical interpretation Deuteronomy 22:5
Some scholars interpret Deuteronomy 22:5 in a Historical perspective. There was a pagan practice “Disguises were assumed at certain times in pagan temples. according to Philocorus, quoted by Townley (in his edition of Maimonides, note 33), to exchange the male and female dresses. In fact, all idolators confounded the sexes of their deities—representing them sometimes as male, at other times as female; and hence, their worshippers, male and female, fell gradually into the custom, which became extensively prevalent, of changing their attire in adaptation to the sex of a particular divinity.”
The debate on the rightness or wrongness of women wearing trousers to church has remained a heated one. Particularly among clerics, with some pastors believing that there was nothing wrong in women wearing trousers to church. To them, this law might have been needed partly because of the pagan customs in the surrounding cultures in the biblical times. If Deuteronomy 22:5 is talking about trousers, and if we are going to go back to the law, then we cannot take ONLY Deuteronomy 22:5 and ignore the rest of the chapter.
the fact is that the scripture doesn’t specify the type of cloth that should be worn by a man or woman, so it depends on what each country, nations, Tribe accepts as the cloth for the man or for woman. It is also important to note that we are not to become stumbling block for others. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 8:13: “Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.” If for some obvious reasons a woman must wear trousers. It should not expose the figures of the woman in such a manner that will tempt men.
